Partnering with stakeholders continued
Cultural heritage
Community partnerships
29Metals is committed to working
with First Peoples to identify, manage
and protect cultural heritage, with our
primary objective to avoid impacts
to cultural heritage.
We are focused on ensuring
communities benefit from our growth
and development. We aim to create
positive and lasting socio-economic
capacity, prosperity, and benefits
for communities.
Both opera琀椀ons strive to maintain a posi琀椀ve rela琀椀onship with
First Peoples communi琀椀es. This involves conduc琀椀ng cultural
heritage surveys, engaging with these groups to iden琀椀fy and
address any poten琀椀al concerns or impacts on culturally signi昀椀cant
ma琀琀ers, and keeping First People’s stakeholders informed
regarding our opera琀椀ng ac琀椀vi琀椀es.
Prior to any ground disturbing works cultural heritage surveys and
clearances are completed with the relevant First Peoples group.
If a new poten琀椀al heritage site is discovered, the established
protocol requires hal琀椀ng of opera琀椀ons, the crea琀椀on of a bu昀昀er
zone around the area, the submission of a heritage no琀椀ce, and
the formula琀椀on of addi琀椀onal heritage management plans in
consulta琀椀on with tradi琀椀onal owners.
Case study
A cultural heritage survey for the Gossan Valley project
At Golden Grove, a cultural heritage survey was conducted in
the Gossan Valley project area by Heritage Link in collabora琀椀on
with the Badimia People. The main objec琀椀ve of this survey was
to iden琀椀fy sites of poten琀椀al heritage signi昀椀cance and historic
conserva琀椀on sites. This work was one of the last remaining
steps prior to compiling a submission for regulatory approvals.
The survey was a collabora琀椀ve e昀昀ort between Environmental
O昀케cer Luke Tebbit and Health & Safety Advisor Je昀昀 Holt,
accompanying the Heritage team. This collabora琀椀on not
only enriched the team’s knowledge and experience, but also
reinforced the strong working rela琀椀onships that 29Metals
has established with the Badimia People.
We con琀椀nue to promote local community engagement through
ini琀椀a琀椀ves such as internship opportuni琀椀es. During the Repor琀椀ng
Period, ongoing support was provided to programs that o昀昀er
educa琀椀on opportuni琀椀es for underprivileged girls in the Geraldton
region, as well as the Capricorn Copper internship program for
Kalkadoon people, called the Indigenous Internship Program.
This Kalkadoon Indigenous Internship Program provides hands
on experience for Kalkadoon people from the region to support
a poten琀椀al career in the mining industry.
Both 29Metals’ opera琀椀ons have Community Advisors in place
to provide a direct liaison between the site and the community.
At Capricorn Copper, a community newsle琀琀er and email address
was created to ensure quicker access to, and response from, the
Community Advisor.
At 29Metals we communicate with the communi琀椀es in the areas
of our opera琀椀ons through mul琀椀ple channels. These include
Community Consulta琀椀ve Commi琀琀ee (‘CCC’) mee琀椀ngs for each
opera琀椀on. The purpose of CCC is to provide an open, honest and
transparent formal communica琀椀on process between the local
community and the opera琀椀on to discuss community interests
and opportuni琀椀es. The CCC is comprised of representa琀椀ves
of community and other interested/relevant stakeholders that
are ac琀椀ve par琀椀cipants in the local community and represent
the community’s values and issues. At Capricorn Copper,
the environmental regulator (DESI) also generally par琀椀cipates
in CCC mee琀椀ngs.
A copy of the minutes of the mee琀椀ngs is forwarded to each
CCC member.
Community consultation and the
Extreme Weather Event
During and following the Extreme Weather Event in
March 202331, keeping community and other stakeholders
informed was a key priority. Similarly, upda琀椀ng the community
regarding our ac琀椀ons to address the damage caused by the
event and to reinstate water management infrastructure was
a focus of the site team throughout the balance of 2023.
Engaging transparently with the community and other
stakeholders will form an important part of 29Metals’ work
during the suspension of mining and milling opera琀椀ons
announced on 26 March 2024, as well as 29Metals’ plans
for a successful and sustainable restart.
